Joyce Carol Oates is an American writer, known for her outstanding and prolific output of novels, plays, poetry and essays. Born in New York State in 1938, she published her first novel in 1968. She has since published over fifty novels and won many awards including two O Henry Awards, the National Book Award and the National Humanities Medal. She has been nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize. She has also written many plays, including Bad Girls, Black, I Stand Before You Naked, Ontological Proof of My Existence and Tone Clusters.
