Frank Norris (1870–1902) was an American novelist and known for being one of the first naturalist writers in the American tradition. His first major novel, McTeague, is a shocking story about a dentist and his wife, which touches on themes of murder, obsession and greed. Other novels include The Octopus, which was to be the first of a trilogy, was followed by The Pit; Norris died of complications related to appendicitis, before the trilogy could be completed. He was 32 years old.
