As a young Jewish man in 17th century Amsterdam, Baruch de Spinoza excelled as a theological student; but as he encountered free-thinking Protestants, atheists, and radicals in this relatively tolerant city, he began to question his religion and the nature of God. As a result, he was branded a heretic and faced excommunication.

David Ives' one-act plays, known collectively as All in the Timing, made his name in the New York theatre scene of the 80s, and have been an ever-present since. He has also written full length plays, including Polish Joke and Is He Dead? (based on Mark Twain's 1898 play), and two novels for young adults, Monsieur Eek and Scrib. He lives, with his wife Martha, in New York City.
